The Team

The Battle of the Badges team is the most important part of the organization. The team provides insight and guidance to the organization to help reach its goals. The members of our team rely on their skills and expertise from their combined years of business, marketing, corporate and boxing experience.

Israel Montes Jr., – Founder and President

Israel Montes Jr. is the Founder and President of the Battle of the Badges charity boxing event in Sacramento, California. He has worked for the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation for over 20 years. The Battle of the Badges event was inspired by the idea of uniting Peace Officers and Firefighters in a competitive sportsmanship boxing competition. This event also benefits the community and charities close to the hearts of those involved. The first event was hosted in the summer of 2003 and has become a yearly tradition. The historic Memorial Auditorium, where some of the greatest boxing matches have been fought has been the site of this great event. Since it’s inauguration over $40,000 dollars has been raised for several charities such as the Firefighters Burn Institute and the Sacramento Sheriff’s Toy Project.

Israel’s passion for boxing began with amateur boxing as a youth. He represented the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation in the Western States Police and Fire Games, winning two gold medals, and a silver. The highlight of Israel’s amateur career was winning the 2003 gold medal in his hometown of Sacramento in front of his family and friends at the age of 38.

Paul Bettencourt, Vice President

Paul Bettencourt has worked with the Department of Corrections for more than 5 years and has a commitment to this great event. Paul has been into Martial arts since he was seven, so fighting has been a big part of his life. In 2007 is when Paul went to his first Battle of the Badge event and loved it. In 2008 Paul asked Mr. Israel Montes If he could be a part of such a great event that is here to help so many great charities. So in 2009, Paul Bettencourt helped with the event at Raley Field and it became an awesome experience working behind the scenes. From there Israel made Paul a partner and together they held the 2010 event back at Memorial auditorium which went off without a hitch. Paul Bettencourt looks forward to working with Israel and Tom on the new fight series.

Christopher Gold, Battle of the Badges PIO

My name is Chris Gold, I am a native Californian, and have resided specifically in the Sacramento area for most of my life. I now reside in El Dorado County with my amazing seven-year-old daughter who is my everything. I graduated high school class of “84”, from La Sierra/ Mira Loma, and soon thereafter I joined the United States Marines, 1984-1988.

I started my employment with the California Department of Corrections in 1989, until present. This Department has been very rewarding and has given me the opportunity to meet some of the finest people who are close friends.

I am an elected State Board Member and Law Enforcement Liaison for the California Correctional Supervisors Organization, (CCSO) proudly representing some of the finest Supervisors and Managers statewide.

I have been an active part of the “Battle of the Badges” since the inception, as the Master of Ceremony (MC). This annual boxing event is a significant contributor to our local communities and contributes financial support to several non-profit organizations that are in desperate need of assistance during these financially challenging times.

I am honored to be a part of the Battle of the Badges and all that they stand for. Thank you and let’s have some fun!

Our History

In 2003, Battle of the Badges was created by Correctional Officers Israel Montes Jr. and Yvonne Vasquez of CSP-Sacramento. Officer Pablo Vazquez Jr. later joined the team and was very inspirational in making the event a huge success. Officer Pablo Vazquez Jr. passed away in 2007. Thank you for all your help Pablo!! The participants consist of Correctional Officers, Police Officers, and Firefighters throughout Northern California. The event has contributed thousands of dollars to many worthy charities. Battle of the Badges started in halls and auditoriums and has grown to become a yearly tradition.

In 2008 the Battle of the Badges charity boxing event was held at the historic Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento. The event drew over 3000 spectators who came to cheer on their favorite fighters. With the help of our participants, sponsors, and volunteers, our past events have been extremely successful and continue to grow in size and popularity.

Rayley Field 2009 was a fantastic charity boxing event held at Raley Field in West Sacramento on October 10, 2009. Raley Field is a beautiful outdoor stadium and home to the River Cats triple AAA baseball team. It has been the host of numerous concerts and community celebrations over the years. Raley Field is nestled along the Sacramento River and only a short walk to Old Sacramento. A great place for dining, shopping, and many points of interest.

Charities benefiting from this year’s event will be The Firefighters Burn Institute, Sacramento Sheriff’s Toy Project, and The Sac Fallen Officers Resource Fund. These fine charities support the lives of burn survivors, also providing for the less fortunate through programs and activities, and offering monetary or other necessary support during times of personal crisis.

Memorial Auditorium Sacramento

This last year the event was held at the Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento. With our past success and knowledge of the location it again proved to be a huge success, we were broadcasted on Radio, Television, and across the Internet while holding many promotional events prior to the fight. We were also on Comcast on Demand this year gaining even more popularity. Sponsors that worked with us on this event received great visibility while benefiting a fantastic cause.

We look forward to this year and have some exciting events coming your way!
